COVID-19, Coronavirus and your Swimming Pool- All You Need to Know to Use a Home Swimming Pool Safely During America’s Sudden Staycation

The Good News? It’s Safe!

This article is about the safety of using your home swimming pool in the era of the coronavirus knows as COVID-19. Before we begin, however, we’d like to say a few words about what’s happening in America and around the world right now.

like many Americans you’re probably a bit concerned about the potential spreading of the coronavirus.

How this epidemic will unfold is yet to be known but one thing is probably clear: many of us will spend much more time at home, which brings us to the focus of this short article; is a home swimming pool safe to use during the COVID-19 pandemic?

YES, Home Swimming Pools are Safe for Use during the Coronavirus or COVID-19 Pandemic

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Confirms It

Millions of people around the country with home swimming pools are getting them ready for the summer months to come, and most of them want to know one thing; is the pool safe during the COVOD-19 pandemic?

We’ll leave the answer to the experts at the US CDA. They stated recently that  ”There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19”.

Notice that they did include the terms “proper operation, maintenance and disinfection”, which basically means that if you maintain your pool, hot tub or spa correctly, using the correct amounts of chlorine or bromide, those chemicals will kill the coronavirus. (That includes saltwater pools as well, where salt turns into chlorine.)

Note that it would still be wise to restrict the use of your pool to your immediate family members only, and also to disinfect the surrounding pool surfaces, to be as safe as possible during these trying times.

Don’t Forget Other Pool Safety Rules

COVID-19 or not, children and adults can still drown in a pool, so please don’t forget to follow all normal pool safety rules now and after the pandemic is contained. That means having fences to keep out children, video systems, pool covers and, if children are on the pool, constant surveillance while they swim.
